Objective / Solution
The Medical University of South Carolina is rethinking what is possible in health care through the design and implementation of artwork as a healing tool throughout the spaces of the new Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital.

Each floor tells a story through large illustrated wall graphics that reflect a Lowcountry theme.

The main lobby is titled “A Warm Welcome to the Lowcountry,” and subsequent floors offer equally charming Charleston themes.

The expansive illustrations are welcoming, engaging and offer a visual exploration at each encounter.

Abstract shapes layer together and form a complex yet approachable visual interpretation, which appeal to a broad patient base - from young children to teens to expectant mothers.

Illustrations, a bold thematic color story, and storytelling combine to create spaces of healing while enhancing the patient experience and overall care.

The hospital's Youth Patient Advisory Council, a group of teenage patients, made insightful suggestions based on personal experience and endorsed the final illustrations.

Culminating with the top floor fittingly called “Rooftops Over the Lowcountry.”
